The records in this accession were created by the Victoria Rescue Control Centre, which is responsible for co-ordinating and undertaking search and resue operations for missing or foundering ships and boats, and for missing or crashed planes.
This accession consists of search and rescue (SAR) files, which document the steps taken during individual search and rescue opeartions. These files are arranged into different blocks documenting different aspects of the SAR operation. The actual SAR reports are found in Block B and are arranged chronologically by the date on which the search mission began and are identified further by the boat's name or the surname of a plane's pilot. These files document the extent and overall co-ordination of the search. They include maps and photographs, communications records, testimony, and the results of investigations into the causes of each incident.

The Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria transferred these records to the Directorate of History at NDHQ, who subsequently transferred them to the National Archives.
