Sub-series consists of minutes, correspondence, reports, surveys, articles, tables and newsletters that support the MRC and its various activities. The files are from the office of Ms. Dorothy Wright, former Executive Assistant to the president of the MRC, who kept official and working files. The files date from 1944 to 1972, are predominantly from 1958 to 1970, and contain information regarding research in Canadian medical schools, hospitals and other medical institutions and organizations. The files can be broken down into four broad groups. The first group contains records relating to MRC as an institution, such as budgets, the Executive, the formation of MRC and committee minutes. The second group of records deals with the functions and activities of MRC, and largely document the main function of providing grants and funds for research. Specific activities carried out by MRC include: surveys of research personnel and research trainees in 1969-1970; surveys of the pharmaceutical industry; and a listing of graduate students in 1971-1972. The third group of records supports other related activities such as monitoring medical research for the International Society of Blood Transfusion (1958); the Medical Research Council in Great Britain and Dr. Steadman's theory on the use of Anti-Hormones in the treatment of syphilis. The fourth group contains general subject files on: medical research (such as the care of experimental animals); applications for visiting scientists; publications on various studies relating to human genetics, biochemistry, psychiatry, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, paediatrics, anatomy, obstetrics, bacteriology, gynaecology, surgery, clinical metabolism, biomedical engineering, immunology and microbiology; doctors who contributed to the development of medical science in Canada; control of hospital infections; and protective clothing and equipment.
