Certificate presenting a resolution of the City of Toronto Council stating its high respect and appreciation of Dr. Archibald A. Riddel, at the time of his departure from the City Council on 8 January 1872.

Riddel, Archibald A., 1819-1883 : Dr. Archibald A. Riddel, doctor and local politician, was born in 1819 probably in Toronto. He worked first for a printing firm before studying medicine. He obtained his doctor's license in 1857. He then went to Mexico to practice his profession and "passed through many thrilling adventures in the revolutions". Before returning to Toronto, he obtained another degree in medicine from the Mexican Republic. He later became coroner for the county of York. Dr. Riddel served also as Medical Superintendent of the Toronto Smallpox Hospital. He was elected alderman in 1871 representing St. David's ward on the City of Toronto Council. He withdrew from the City Council in January 1872. He died on 15 December 1883 at the age of 64 years and five days. The "Globe" published a short obituary about him on 17 December 1883.

Original certificate lent to the National Archives of Canada in 1974 for copying purposes by Mrs. G.A. McClelland of Toronto.
