The fonds consists of six day books (1877-1892) and a journal (1890-1891) which document the day-to-day business of a prominent general merchant in Harriston, Wellington County, Ontario. The accounting records of Alexander Mieklejohn & Co. illustrate the changing nature of goods sold -- from a wide variety of groceries, clothes and dry goods in the early years to hardware after 1879. They may be used to illustrate costs and consumption patterns in a typical southwestern Ontario community in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

Alexander Mieklejohn & Company : Alexander Mieklejohn emigrated to Canada West from Scotland in 1851. He initially settled in Toronto before moving to Perth County in 1853. Finally in 1861 he set up shop as a general merchant in Harriston, Canada West. Mieklejohn quickly established himself in the community and by the 1870's was Harriston's leading businessman. In 1876 he was joined by his nephew John Mieklejohn from Scotland who became a partner in the firm of Mieklejohn & Co. two years later. The business became more specialized with the partners operating a dry goods store. After Alexander Mieklejohn died in 1881, John carried on the business with the assistance of his cousin James Moore until 1913.

Both Alexander and John Mieklejohn were active in local politics. Alexander served as reeve of Harriston for four terms in the 1870's and was Harriston's first mayor in 1878. He also served as a school trustee. John was a school trustee, a member of the town council, and mayor from 1900 to 1902.
