This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accession. Series consists of records covering the entire duration of the International Programme, from 1972 to 1990. The records relate to foreign exhibitions in Canada and Canadian exhibitions abroad. Although there are some administrative files, for the most part the series contains operational records. These include general files on the formulation of policy and correspondence between museum officials, senior federal bureaucrats and their foreign counterparts. There are also operational files concerning cultural accords between Canada and such other countries as Belgium, China, Germany, and the United States. Finally there are subject files for each foreign and Canadian exhibition the programme promoted. These files include correspondence between the programme and local museums, letters of appreciation from Canadian visitors, client statistics, memoranda concerning the physical organization of the exhibits and evaluation reports from the directors of Canadian museums and galleries.

National Museums of Canada. International Programme : The International Programme was responsible for coordinating the exchange of exhibitions between Canadian museums and foreign art galleries and cultural institutions. The Programme was part of the National Programmes Branch of the National Museums of Canada and handled the liaison between museum personnel and senior Canadian bureaucrats. In carrying out its activites, the International Programme was often required to work in close collaboration with the Cultural Affairs Branch of the Department of External Affairs. The Programme participated in the signing of cultural accords between Canada and foreign countries and also was active on the consultative committee on foreign cultural relations. After the dismantlement of the NMC in 1987, the records of the International Programme were transferred first to the Department of Communications before coming to the National Archives.
