Dominion Bridge Company

Interview of George Campbell, former superintendent of the Dominion Bridge Company. Campbell, who began with the company in 1898 at the age of 13 and remained with the company for 60 years, recalls his first job with the company heating rivets for ten cents an hour during a ten-hour day. Campbell also sketches the history of the company from its beginnings as a tiny workshop in Toronto in 1882. Continuing with his career at Dominion Bridge, Campbell highlights his pleasant association with Native co-workers from the Caughnawaga Reserve in Quebec when he worked at the company's Lachine plant, and the pioneering work done by Dominion Bridge in the field of electric arc welding which replaced riveting in the 1930s. Other topics include: his memories of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike; the Quebec Bridge disasters; and some of the projects he has worked on during his long career with Dominion Bridge.
