McCarten discusses his former involvement in landscape design; the relationship of his design work to his painting, in which he uses wood forms; his early work in sculpture; his use of urban imagery although he is currently living in the country at Thickson's Point on Lake Ontario; his recent work in the genre of abstract expressionism; his use of sand and acrylic paints in former works; his family life; his relationship with other artists such as Jackson Pollock and Paul Sloggett; and his art education.
