World Conference on Religion and Peace/Canada : The first World Conference on Religion and Peace met in Kyoto, Japan, in 1970, representing all major religions. It resulted in issuing a statement concerning their common convictions and the decision to establish a permanent organization to promote on-going cooperation for peace. Three Canadians attended the Kyoto Assembly, and three others participated in the Louvain Assembly in 1974. Between these two assemblies a number of Canadians joined with an American delegation at a Canada-U.S. colloquium in Racine, Wisconsin, which focused on issues in Canada-U.S. relations.

In 1972, 35 Canadians met near Toronto, Ontario to hear a report of the Kyoto meeting. A second Canadian meeting was convened in 1975 following the Louvain Conference. At this meeting it was decided to establish a permanent branch of WCRP in Canada. A Board of Directors was then appointed, and WCRP (Canada) came into being as a fledgling organization. It received its letters patent 2 June 1976. Beginning with Toronto in 1978, local chapters developed in major Canadian cities.

Within the broad context of WCRP objectives, WCRP (Canada) has addressed itself to concerns of particular relevance to the Canadian scene, as its population became increasingly multireligious and multicultural. While not neglecting the larger issues of disarmament, development, and human rights on the world scale, WCRP (Canada) has placed great emphasis on the contribution which people of various religious faiths might make to the building of peace, understanding and mutual acceptance in Canadian society. Its mandate, however, is not concerned with interfaith dialogue as such but rather with involving people of all faiths in common action for peace.
