Union activities in Sudbury, Ontario, broadcast over CKSO station. Introduction quotes program producers on their reasons for making this documentary. Narration pinpoints the underlying cause of dissension within Local 598 as allegations of Communist Party affiliation of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers' leaders both from within the Sudbury Local and from external forces, rather than dissatisfaction with the work or accomplishments of the union. External forces against Mine Mill: its expulsion from the Canadian Congress of Labour in 1949 and the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1950 are set against a backdrop of the Cold War and Inco's monopoly on nickel. The documentary examines why these charges of communist involvement had no effect within the Sudbury local until the 1958 strike provided an opportunity for the election of an openly anti-communist executive hostile to the National leadership and which gave tacit approval for United Steelworkers of America to destroy Mine Mill. The role of the Catholic Church and of Professor A.J. Boudreau, of the University of Sudbury, in training potential leaders of the new executive is clearly shown as outside interference in union affairs. Includes interviews by Wilf List with the major figures in what he terms the final drama: Julien Payzette, Director of Extension Courses, University of Sudbury, the Catholic college of Laurentian University (formerly Assistant Director under Boudreau); Bob Carlin, former Mine Mill leader (in the Kirkland Lake strike of 1941-42 and the organizing campaign in Sudbury in 1943) and former CCF MPP for the Sudbury riding, now working for Steel; Don MacNabb, Vice-President Local 598; Harvey Murphy, Western Director, Mine Mill; William Mahoney, Canadian Director, USWA; Ken Smith, Mine Mill National President; Don Gillis, Local 598 President; Mike Solski, Mine Mill District 2 President; and Inco employees, both Steel and Mine Mill supporters.
