Interview of Leonard Knott, about his career as a newspaper reporter and in public relations. He speaks about: growing up in Winnipeg, the city in which he was born in 1905; the predominance of people Anglo-Saxon background in the city's south end and at the university; cultural life and landmarks inWinnipeg; his joining the staff of the TORONTO STAR in 1927; the encouragement fellow TORONTO STAR reporters Greg Clark and Morley Callaghan gave to Ernest Hemingway while he was also at the STAR; the work of reporters at the TORONTO STAR in the 1920s; the differences between reporters then and now; newspaper reporting as a male occupation in the 1920s; the rise of the newspaper columnist; the decline of local news reporting; his coverage in 1920 of the Search for the [MacAlpine] pilots lost in the Arctic; the practice of newspapers of the past to send a team of reporters to cover a big story; his view that newspaper reporters of the past worked harder than they do now; the 1929 "Christmas Massacre" at the Star, when Knott and a group of his colleagues, including Gordon Sinclair, were fired after being caught playing a crap game in the newspaper dark room; Knott's move to the MONTREAL GAZETTE; the effect of the Depression on the newspaper business, notably wage cuts and the lack of job opportunities; his move to public relations and writing books; and his dislike of new technology such as word processors and videotape, that have changed communicating from an imaginative or creative occupation to a technological process.
