Music Section : The Canada Council Music Section funds a variety of music organizations including orchestras, opera companies, choirs, instrumental ensembles and services organizations. It also supports some training, Canadian recordings, contemporary music and a commissioning program which stimulates the composition of Canadian music. Most of the funding is directed to professional classical music and musicians.

The Publication of Canadian Music grants programme encourages the publication of Canadian composers of their music by Canadian publishing firms. The Grant for Recordings aids young musicians in recording their music on Canadian independent labels. It also supports companies in the recording of Canadian music and authentic folk heritage works. The programme of Commissioning of Canadian Composers is designed to encourage the creation of new Canadian compositions by granting funds to artists or organizations to commission a work from a composer for a specific performer or for a performance by a music or other types of arts organization. The individual grant covers the composer's fee and copying costs. RG63 accession 1987-88/042 (GAD)

All records from this series were appraised as non-archival under MIDA 2005/006. They were returned to the custody of Canada Council for the Arts.

Researchers should also consult the Arts Awards Service series (MIKAN 140827, R834-9-3-E). Individual musicians are funded through the Arts Awards Service. They may apply for grants in the following areas: performance and composition of classical music; opera stage direction; composition, arrangement, songwriting and performance of Jazz, rock and folk music; instrument-making; and orchestral and choral conducting.
