Fonds consists primarily of documents relating to railway location and feasibility studies conducted by Mr. Charles in Canada and Africa between 1957 and 1967. Included are two files dealing with the Hudson Bay Railway, a project on which Mr. Charles played an important role, and a file providing an historical introduction to engineering achievement in the province of Manitoba, 1912-1967.

Fonds also contains maps prepared or collected by Mr. Charles in his capacity as consulting engineer with the Canadian National Railway, Winnipeg, Man. One item is a portfolio of three maps to accompany preliminary studies with respect to a location for a railway to Great Slave Lake, N.W.T.: No. 1 Key Map. Northwestern Canada Transportation facilities (50 miles to 1 inch); No. 2. Map of area north of The Pas, Prince Albert, Edmonton and Prince George to Great Slave Lake and latitude 63 degrees showing the principal known and potential resources and projected railway routes (16 miles to 1 inch); No. 3 Map of area north of waterways and Grimshaw, Alta. to the south shore of Great Slave Lake showing projected railway route (8 miles to 1 inch). The other two maps also deal with the march of railways into the Canadian north: Map of Canada: Railways March Northward (600 miles to 2 1/4 inches) and CNR. Sketch of map of Hudson Bay (Jct.) to Churchill, Man. and relative branch lines, 1957-1960.

Charles, John Leslie, 1892-1992 : John Leslie Charles was born in 1892 in England, where he trained as a civil engineer. In 1910 he immigrated to Canada to work with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. He served in France, 1915-1919, principally with Canadian Railway Troops. Discharged in 1919, he joined the Western Division of the Canadian National Railway, working on the Hudson Bay Railway and other lines. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers, 1939-1943, returned to the C.N.R. in 1943 and in 1945 was appointed Chief Engineer, Western Region. He retired from this position in 1957, but continued with C.N.R. as Consulting Engineer (Systems), 1957-1965; in this position he undertook railway location studies for lines in various parts of Canada. He also performed similar studies for railways in Liberia, 1959, Zambia, 1965-1966, and Brazil, 1974.
