Radio broadcast from the anteroom of the Senate in Ottawa of a special ceremony unveiling a tablet to the five women in the persons case. A reporter sets the scene, noting that three of the five are dead. Of the two living, Nellie McClung of Victoria is here in person and Irene Parlby is listening by radio from her farm in Alex, Alberta. Dr. M. Ellen Douglas, president of the Canadian Federation of Professional and Business Women's Clubs, briefly lists the achievements of the famous five, all from Alberta: Henrietta Muir Edwards, law researcher; Emily F. Murphy, first woman magistrate in the British Empire; Nellie L. McClung, MLA; Louise C. McKinney, first woman elected to any Canadian legislature; and Mary Irene Parlby, Alberta MLA and cabinet minister. Then Dr. Douglas introduces William Lyon Mackenzie King. Mackenzie King, prime minister of Canada both in 1929 and 1938, pays tribute to the women. He briefly traces the history of the advancement of women in the legal profession and among legislators. After the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that women were not persons under the British North America Act and were not eligible for appointment to the Senate, the Liberal government successfully appealed to the British Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Since then, two women have been appointed senators. He reads the inscription on the plaque. Mrs. Kenwood, daughter of Emily Murphy, thanks those present and offers the advice her late mother might have given in the present day. Nellie McClung, author and now a member of the Board of Broadcast Governors, thanks those for making the decision possible, including those famous, forgotten and unknown. She pays tribute to the other four pioneer women, especially Murphy. McClung reads the message from Irene Parlby. Parlby thanks her colleagues, Mackenzie King and others. She hopes for greater participation by women in the Canadian Parliament. Mrs. Josephine A. Dofney, honourary president and originator of the tablet idea, speaks from Vancouver. She thanks the women and male politicians who made it possible. Senator Louis Côté speaks in French, describing the plaque and its importance. He acknowleges the bi-partisan support of King and Conservative R.B. Bennett. The recording ends abruptly. <27mn 30s>
