Shown under the auspices of the American Women's Voluntary Services to Canadian Women's Voluntary Services the film shows the work of the British WVS, serving without pay, rank or officers, in the Home Front and in releasing men for war duties, women are seen in the army, navy and air force and fire service and as air raid wardens, aircraft ferry pilots and in the Women's Land Army. 750,000 women have voluntered in the past two years. Vehicle and ambulance drivers are trained, gas mask drills, on and off duty. Hospital working parties at the Royal Hospital Chelsea and at a village, children deliver the work done at home on horseback, other volunteers young and old. East London knitting, Scotland shawl knitting, collecting cigarettes, first aid point set-up. WVS care for survivors from the ship "Belgie". Nursing training, the Cross of St. John, medical evacuation training. Dispersal of the population and evacuation of children to various locations in England, housing feeding and clothing. Canteen workers for the Forces Entertainment concerts. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in support of the WVS which was at work on September 11, 1939 one week after the Second World War broke out.
