This is part of the official opening ceremony of the Ottawa Airport at Uplands. The recording begins abruptly, with the tail end of a comment by the announcer about Killaloe, Ontario. The unidentified announcer then introduces J.A. Wilson, Controller of Civil Aviation for the federal Department of Transport. Wilson gives a speech about the Canadian system of airports & efforts by the Canadian government to construct a system of safe airports across the country. He talks about the features planned for the airports in the system, including hard-surface runways. C.D. Howe, the Minister of Transport, then speaks about the qualities needed for safe air transportation in Canada, such as radio beacons 100-feet apart. The recording begins to skip as he speaks & the speech apparently ends abruptly. Next, there are comments by Commander C.P. Edwards, the Chief of Air Services for the Department of Transport, who describes the pleasure of finally being able to take off and land at the airport, "without being shaken to pieces". He introduces the next speaker, Mrs. C.D. Howe. Mrs. Howe says that she is not able to comment on the technical features of the airport, but that "women think of things in personal terms". Keeping in mind the desire for women to keep in touch with their families, she says that the new Ottawa airport will allow faster mail transportation and easier transportation to outlying areas of Canada. The announcer then describes Mrs. Howe's walk to the centre of the runway, where she cuts the ceremonial ribbon stretched across it and police officers hold the crowds back. A plane zooms overhead. The announcer tells listeners that Mr. & Mrs. Howe, as well as other members of the official party are going to take a flight. He also introduces [Sydney Naismith], the associate editor of Canadian Aviation, who is to comment on the afternoon's competition for the Webster Trophy. The recording ends before [Naismith] speaks & the flight begins. <8mn 40s>
