Hurtubise, Claude, 1914-1999 : Claude Hurtubise, né à Westmount (Québec) en 1914, fait ses études primaires à l'école St-Léon de Westmount et ses études classiques au Collège Sainte-Marie, Montréal, où il obtient un B.A. en 1935.
En mars 1934, Claude Hurtubise participe avec Robert Charbonneau, Paul Beaulieu, Robert Élie, Jean Le Moyne et Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau à la fondation de la revue "La Relève" qu'il administre durant ses 14 années de publication soit jusqu'en 1948. "La Relève" veut exprimer un besoin de renouveau intellectuel et s'oriente du côté de la philosophie personnaliste de Maritain et de Mounier, de la spiritualité et de l'esthétique. En 1941, la revue devient "La Nouvelle Relève".
En 1940, Claude Hurtubise fonde, avec Robert Charbonneau, les Éditions de l'Arbre qui, jusqu'à la faillite en 1948, publient plus de 200 ouvrages dont les premières oeuvres d'écrivains tels que Anne Hébert, Yves Thériault, Roger Lemelin, Robert Charbonneau, François Hertel, Berthelot Brunet. La revue porte une attention soutenue aux échanges culturels avec le Canada anglais et les États-Unis et l'Arbre est la première maison canadienne-française à publier les traductions d'écrivains américains et canadiens-anglais. De même, la paralysie de l'imprimerie en France durant le régime de Vichy incite les intellectuels français, souvent réfugiés en Amérique afin de conserver leur liberté d'expression, à faire publier et/ou réimprimer et à faire traduire en d'autres langues leurs oeuvres par des maisons d'éditions montréalaises. C'est ainsi que les Éditions de l'Arbre publient Jacques et Raïssa Maritain, Léon Blum, Victor Serge et bien d'autres.
Claude Hurtubise fait aussi partie de l'équipe de fondation des "Écrits du Canada français", en 1954, avec Jean-Louis Gagnon, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Gérard Pelletier, Gilles Marcotte, Jean Simard et Marcel Dubé. De nombreux écrivains devenus célèbres dont Jacques Godbout, Hubert Aquin, Marcel Dubé et Marie-Claire Blais y ont publié leurs premiers textes. M. Hurtubise administre les "Écrits" de 1954 à 1981.
En 1960, Claude Hurtubise fonde, avec l'aide de Roger Mame, de la maison Mame de Tours (France), les Éditions HMH (Hurtubise, Mame et Hatier) qui, en 1969, deviennent les Éditions Hurtubise-HMH, Ltée. Le premier livre publié aux Éditions HMH est "Convergences", de Jean Le Moyne, qui est réédité à maintes reprises et vendu à plus de 25 000 exemplaires. Dans le secteur "Essais", on trouve, en plus de Jean Le Moyne, les écrivains tels que Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Gilles Marcotte, Ernest Gagnon, Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau, Robert Élie, André Laurendeau et Guy Frégault; dans d'autres domaines, Anne Hébert, Gabrielle Roy, Yves Thériault, Alain Grandbois, Naïm Kattan, Frank Scott et Joseph Schull. HMH publie également les premières traductions françaises de Marshall McLuhan, Northrop Frye, Hugh MacLennan, Mordacai Richler, Morley Callaghan, Margaret Laurence et autres. Claude Hurtubise quitte les éditions Hurtubise HMH en 1975 pour les éditions La Presse qu'il dirige jusqu'en 1978 où il se retire du milieu de l'édition.
Claude Hurtubise participe activement à tous les organismes professionnels de l'édition. Ainsi, dès 1943, il est membre fondateur de l'Association des éditeurs canadiens; en 1960, membre des groupes fondateurs de l'Association des éditeurs de manuels scolaires du Québec et du Conseil supérieur du livre. En 1961, à titre de président de l'Association des éditeurs canadiens, il participe à la fondation, à Paris, de l'Association internationale des éditeurs de langue française.
En dehors du domaine de l'édition, M. Hurtubise est membre fondateur, en 1942, de la Ligue des droits civiques formée par un groupe comprenant Frank Scott, la sénatrice Thérèse Casgrain, le juge Roger Ouimet et autres. En 1970, il joint la ligue des droits de l'Homme.
