The collection consists of postcards and postal covers bearing postal markings from 160 post offices of Middlesex County, Ont. These post offices operate under different names than the postmarks. Some have operated under three to four different names. From 1912 to 1914 more than 90 post offices were closed due to the advent of rural mail delivery.

Shantz, Stan, 1902-1973 : Stan Shantz was born in 1902 and was the father to two sons, Murray and Graham. He was both a copy editor and reporter for the London Free Press. He continued to write a weekly stamp article even after his retirement in 1969. In 1968 he began operating the Middlesex Stamp Auctions. Interested in philately at a young age, Stan Shantz became actively involved in the field as an adult. He was the founder and first editor for the Postal History Society of Ontario. He was President of the London Philatelic Society, 1962-1964, and member of the Stratford Stamp Club. His main philatelic interests were the closed Middlesex County Post Offices and he authored "Philately in London, Ontario, 1825-1967". Stan Shantz died in London, Ontario in 1973. Historique de la conservation :

Originally bequeathed to the National Postal Museum (CPC) in 1974 where it remained on display until 1988. Transferred to the Canadian Postal Archives (NAC) in 1988.

Note sur le classement :

The postal covers were mounted by the National Postal Museum for display and include the original comments and introduction of Stanley Shantz. The material was collected by Shantz while researching Middlesex County post offices.
