Sub-series consists of two principal types of records. The first group consists of fourteen bound chief officers, chief engineers' and mates' logbooks for the C.G.S. "Arctic", the C.G.S. "Franklin", and the S.S. "Boethic". The second body of records feature notebooks and diaries compiled mainly by Major D.L. McKeand while on the Eastern Arctic Patrol for the periods 1921-1922 and 1932-1944.

Eastern Arctic Patrol : In 1922, the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch of the Department of the Interior centralized the northern functions of the government. The government re-established the prewar northern voyages to assert Canadian Arctic sovereignty. These voyages were now called the Eastern Arctic Patrol. By 1936, the Bureau of Northwest Territories and Yukon Affairs had two major administrative components -- the Mackenzie District and the Eastern Arctic Division -- each under a Superintendent. Under the Eastern Arctic Division of the Bureau fell the general administration of the Eastern Arctic Patrol. In 1947, a major reorganization of the Department of Mines and Resources resulted in the establishment of the Lands and Development Services Branch which included the Northwest Territories and Yukon Service. The main functions of the Service were not significantly different from those of the older Bureau of Northwest Territories and Yukon Affairs, and included the administration of the Eastern Arctic Patrol. By 1951, the Eastern Arctic Patrol fell under the jurisdiction of the Arctic Services component of the Northern Administration Division of the Northern Administration and Lands Branch.

Photographs taken during the Patrol's expeditions can be found under the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch photographs sub-series (R216, MIKAN 204806). Additionally, "Eastern Arctic Patrol Surveys" files (file no. 851-1-12) are included in the Indian and Northern Health Services sub-series (R227, MIKAN 193856). See also the Eastern Arctic patrol manuscript and research notes series (MIKAN 133939), a part of the Gordon Myles fonds (R147, MIKAN 133930). The records document the Eastern Arctic Patrol and the R.M.S. Nascopie, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police postal activities, the Hudson's Bay Company role in Arctic mail, and the various Arctic settlements. The records cover the study period 1917 to 1979 and consist of research notes and a manuscript written and accumulated by Gordon Myles.
