The collection comprises one chalk drawing of Robert Tait Mackenzie (1867-1938) by American illustrator and muralist Violet Oakley (1874-1961). Robert Tait Mackenzie was a physician who used his knowledge of medicine and musculature in the execution of his medals, many of which are in the National Archives' collection. McKenzie also taught anatomy to art students at the University of Pennsylvania. Violet Oakley was enrolled in his classes and the portrait was executed at that time, in 1925.

Oakley, Violet, 1874-1961 : Violet Oakley (1874-1961) was one of America's best-known murallists and illustrators. She was born in New Jersey and studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York City. Her more formal art education, after 1896, was received through the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Under the tutelage of Howard Pyle, Oakley concentrated on illustration and began regularly contributing to such major publications as Harper's, Collier's and Ladies Home Journal. After 1908, she devoted herself, primarily, to stained glass design and mural painting - both outlets through which she believed she could better proffer a moral message. Her most important commissioned murals were for the Pennsylvania State Capital building in Harrisburg. Oakley was the first American female artist entrusted with the decoration of a state public building. Over the course of 25 years, she executed 43 murals for that site which were based on the founding of the state and events leading to the creation of the American Union. She was closely allied, throughout her lifetime, with friends and fellow artists Jessie Wilcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green. The three artists were enormously successful financially and were inspirational for a generation of women artists.
