All aspects of the crown corporation are documented in the fonds. Of particular importance are the records concerning wartime planning to alleviate the shortage of natural rubber and the construction and operation of the Sarnia complex. The post-war developments documented include: the growth of world-wide markets for synthetic rubber and latex; and the organization of research and development activities; the expansion of production facilities, and the construction of plants in Europe.
Polysar's diversification into other business ventures in the 1970's and the rapid expansion of its core petrochemical operations during the 1970's and the early 1980's are documented. Polymer/Polysar's financing and legal status are also covered in the records. This fonds represents the life cycle of one of Canada's most successful crown corporations.
The fonds contains also films related to the synthetic rubber industry in Canada and the Canadian Development Corporation.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Polysar Limited : The Polymer Corporation, a federal crown corporation, was founded in 1942 to provide a secure wartime source of synthetic rubber for Canada and the Commonwealth. Production facilities were built at Sarnia, Ontario. The first rubber was produced in 1943 and the plant was fully operational by 1944.
After the end of the Second World War the corporation continued in business branching out into several related fields. The company also expanded internationally establishing plants in Europe, and the United States.
In 1972 Polymer was sold to the Canada Development Corporation and in 1973 the company was renamed Polysar Limited. In 1988 Polysar was sold by CDC to Nova Corporation.
