Series consists of administrative and publicity files from the Music Department of the NAC. The records include the files of M. Jean-Marie Beaudet, Director of Music (1967-1971), as well as those of the Administrative and Programming Office of the Music Department. The series also contains the files of Mario Bernardi, Artistic Director and Conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra (1970-1975). Included are the files of Bernardi as Artistic Director of Festival Canada; as a result, there is material here on the opera and chamber music programming associated with the Festival. The series also contains the files of K. Murphy, Orchestra Manager (1969-1982), some Festival Ottawa files, National Arts Centre Orchestra Touring records, files of particular artists engaged by the Music Department to perform at the NAC, and records from the Music Department Publicity Office.

There is one film in the series, depicting performances of Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály at the Dartmouth Summer Festival in Dartmouth, New Hampshire, in 1965.

National Arts Centre (Canada). Music Dept : In 1964, an advisory committee on music was set up to make recommendations to the Coordinator of the projected National Centre for the Performing Arts in Ottawa. In 1967, the Board of Trustees of the NAC met for the first time and decided that all artistic activities, including music, would be run by the NAC Board of Trustees rather than by tenant organizations. In 1967-68, Jean-Marie Beaudet was appointed Director of Music. He was, in fact, seconded from the CBC. The Board of Trustees approved the creation of a permanent orchestra. In 1968-69, Mario Bernardi was appointed Orchestra Conductor. During 1969-70, the National Arts Centre Orchestra came into existence under Mario Bernardi. A volunteer group, the National Arts Centre Orchestra Association, also came into existence in order to stimulate community support for the orchestra. In 1970-71, Mario Bernardi replaced Jean-Marie Beaudet as Director of Music. In 1974-75, the music department for the first time was directly responsible for collaborative efforts with a visiting Opera Company. In 1977-78, the NAC orchestra went on a European tour; it had gone on an earlier European tour in 1973. In 1981-82, Mario Bernardi left the NAC to become Music Director and Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic. Franco Mannino became Principle Conductor and Artistic Advisor. In 1985-86, the NAC orchestra toured extensively with a tour to Japon and Hong Kong, and a tour to the USA. The music department also arranged to have thirty orchestera concerts broadcast on the CBC. In the same year, Gabriel Chmuraw was selected as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the NAC orchestra. In 1988-89, the NAC orchestra made a seven-concert Easter tour in West Germany along with the Gaechinger Kantorei of Stuttgart. The orchestra also toured northern Ontario and Quebec. In 1989-1990, the music season was delayed by a seven-week strike of the orchestra. The orchestra went on a 13 city American tour. The orchestra was also featured in a new opera production of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. During the 1977-1978 program year, the Music Department became part of the Programming Branch.
