Series consists of central registry case files dating from the earliest activities of the Wartime Labour Relations Board; they document hearings held by the Board. Two central registry file blocks are represented: file series 751 deals with applications for the certification of unions, submitted to the Board between 1944 and 1948; file series 756 deals with appeals against Board decisions in the same period. The records include correspondence with unions and companies, transcripts of hearings, copies of ballots used in certification votes, and decisions rendered by the Board.

Canada. Wartime Labour Relations Board : On 17 February 1944, the federal government passed Order-in-Council P.C. 1003 which brought into being the Wartime Labour Relations Regulations. The Regulations provided for collective bargaining between employers and employees and aimed at facilitating the settlement of industrial disputes. Another Order-in-Council, P.C. 1982, brought the Regulations into force on 20 March 1944.

The Regulations were administered by a Board known as the Wartime Labour Relations Board consisting of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman and eight other members. Of the eight "other members", four represented employer organizations and four represented employee organizations. The Wartime Labour Relations Board was appointed on 16 March 1944 by Order-in-Council P.C. 1895, and held its initial sittings on 27, 28 and 29 March 1944.

The Regulations administered by the Wartime Labour Relations Board applied to employers and employees engaged in industries that normally came under federal jurisdiction as well as industries designated by the Regulations as war industries. The provinces were left with a choice as to whether they would allow industries normally under their jurisdiction to be covered by the Regulations. The provinces were also left with the option of establishing provincial administrative agencies to administer the Regulations. In the latter case, however, the federal Wartime Labour Relations Board continued to be responsible for the formulation of general policy and for the hearing and deciding of appeals from the decisions of provincial boards.

On 1 September 1948, the Canada Labour Relations Board succeeded the Wartime Labour Relations Board. RG145 General Inventory
