Series consists of part of the correspondence registry of J. Dewey Soper. This registry includes alphabetically arranged correspondence files for authors with surnames beginning with the letters F, G, K, M, P, R, S, T, V, W. The correspondence contains information relating to Soper's activities as first biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service, Chief Federal Wildlife Officer for the Prairie Provinces, and Chief Migratory Bird Officer of the Prairie Provinces.

Soper, J. Dewey (Joseph Dewey), 1893-1982 : Dr. J.D. Soper served as a naturalist on the Canadian Government's expedition to the Eastern Arctic in 1923. He continued to develop his knowledge of the Eastern Arctic while a member of the Geological Survey, and later as a member of the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch of the Department of the Interior. For a number of years, he was Chief Wildlife Officer on the Prairies. When he retired in 1952, he was Chief Wildlife Officer for Alberta, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.

His more than 100 scientific and popular articles and books were illustrated often with his own pen sketches and watercolours. The names of several mammals such as Soper's ringed sea and geographical features on Baffin Island such as Soper River testify to his work.
