This is a preliminary description, please consult the linked accessions. Series consists of records related to the NRC's Teleoperator Office's relations with the Johnson Space Center and with Spar Aerospace. The files cover the period, roughly, from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s and the flights of STS-2, STS-3, STS-4, STS-5 and STS-7. A significant portion of the documentation consists of items from the Johnson Space Centre. Other files relate to the engineering aspects of the project, including test data, engineering specifications, film analysis, inspection report. Also included are meeting and conference records and crew debriefing reports as well as a series of forms sent by SPAR to the NRC from whom it required approval for any major and minor design and other changes to the space arm.

Canada. Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm) : When the United States' Space Program introduced its Space Transportation System (STS) program (Space Shuttle), Canada became responsible for the engineering design of the STS' Remote Manipulator System (RMS), more commonly known as the Canada Space Arm. Designed to simulate the movements and capabilities of the human hand and arm, the Space Arm enabled each mission to set up and move various payloads in space required to conduct and complete certain tasks.

The National Research Council was the agency responsible for coordinating the design and production of the space arm. SPAR Aerospace, a private Canadian aerospace engineering company, was directly responsible for the design, production and testing of the arm. The records in this accession were transferred to the National Archives by Bruce A. Aikenhead, Project Manager, Teleoperator Project Office, National Research Council. The records cover various activities of this office in its work with both SPAR and the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas.
