Discussion hosted by Newfoundland Member of Parliament and Minister of Transport Donald Jamieson at his home in Newfoundland, with a group of young people. Issues discussed include: social mores; lowering the drinking age; the generation gap; Newfoundland society; materialism; lifestyles; economic development; finding a job; compromise as an essential element in the functioning of democracy; law; education; spiritual values; public transit in Newfoundland; the construction of a recreation centre; lowering the voting age; his opinion of Pierre Elliott Trudeau; the construction of ports suitable for their cargoes; the transport of dangerous cargoes and the risk of pollution due to spills of hazardous cargoes and accidents; his decision to permit the U.S. oil tanker Manhattan to travel through the Northwest Passage; the pollution caused by the oil tanker Arrow off Nova Scotia and the legal loopholes that allowed the owner of the tanker, the very wealthy Aristotle Onassis, to avoid paying for the cleanup; American control of large segments in the Canadian economy; the need for a Canadian development corporation to raise for investment in Canada; energy policy; the development of an industrial strategy; Canada's decision to reduce its commitment in NATO because NATO required all participants to have nuclear capability; and Canada's defence policy. <2h 17mn 40s>
