5 microfilm reels 16 mm filmLangue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Series consists of documents related to the administration and operations of the Examination Unit (EU) and the Joint Discrimination Unit (JDU), the organizations responsible for anaylzing and deciphering enemy signals during the Second World War.
The records in RG 24 Volume 29163 to Volume 29168 deal with various aspects of the work of these units and their cooperation and liaison with signals intelligence (SIGINT) units in the Canadian Armed Forces and their American and British counterparts. In addition, there is a formerly classified official history of the Examination Unit, written by staff members.
The records in RG 24 Volume 29168 to Volume 29173 are decrypts of intercepted diplomatic signals from the Germans and the Japanese. The intercepted signals mostly originated with German and Japanese diplomats located in neutral South and Central American countries.
The records in RG 24 Volume 20306 to Volume 20307 are also decryps of intercepted diplomatic signals from the Germans and Japanese diplomatic service.
The records found on microfilm reels RG 24 T-17425 to T-17427 are decrypts of intercepted diplomatic signals originating with the diplomatic service of the Free French. Examination Unit : The Examination Unit was established by External Affairs under the auspices of the National Research Council in June 1941 to undertake cryptanalysis, or codebreaking, operations. The Unit worked closely with other Allied intelligence organizations, especially British Security Co-ordination in New York City. The Unit's main responsibility was decoding intercepted wireless traffic between Germany and enemy agents located in neutral countries, particularly in South America, and between Japan and Japanese consulates in the United States. The Unit was disbanded at the end of the war. In September 1946, the responsibility for signals intelligence was transferred to the Communications Branch of the National Research Council.
