Series consists of records from the Office of the Auditor General. From 1927 to 1998, the records are arranged using an alphabetical filing system. These records are arranged by the name of the department or agency and then subdivided into year-end supplemental and interim audit files or another subject related to the auditing of accounts. The year-end file usually contains a covering memorandum commenting on the state of accounts, pointing out any discrepancies and recommending changes or modifications to the accounting and reporting system. Supporting documentation may include such financial data as statements of assets and liabilities, revenue and expenditure, trial balance, or operating capital. Correspondence, minutes of meetings, Orders-in-Council, by-laws, and agreements related to the auditing of individual departments or agencies are throughout the year-end file. The supplemental, interim or other subject files contain documentation that is similar in nature to the year-end file but are incomplete for that year. Handwritten notes, statistical data and inventories of material and equipment held by that agency may also be found in these files. Some inventories are very detailed, such as those for the Federal District Commission, which list everything cultivated by the Commission's nursery. Information from these files was incorporated into the Auditor General's annual report to Parliament if the audit findings were particularly significant to warrant comments.

The Auditor General Act, 1977 resulted in the complete reorganization of the file system and prompted the move from alphabetical filing to numeric filing. Around 1990, all the old files (1927-1954) which were not part of the official numbering system were given by the records management of the Office of the Auditor General a number according to the new classification system. The records have been grouped together in this series, according to the operational units of all files of audits performed by the Office of the Auditor General, i.e. attest audits; value-for-money audits; government wide audits; and special studies.
