Sub-series consists of five letterbooks of outgoing correspondence of the Superintending Engineer. The letterbooks are indexed and contain some personal correspondence. Researchers should also note that the first letterbook (Vol. 2435) contains 283 pages of Munro's correspondence while he was at the Welland Canal, May 1887-January 1889.

Canada. Dept. of Railways and Canals. Office of the Superintending Engineer, Soulanges Canal : The Superintending Engineer, Soulanges Canal was responsible for all aspects of administration, maintenance and operation on the canal system. The duties of the Superintending Engineer included conducting surveys, overseeing repairs and new construction, enforcing Canal Regulations, and supervising canal employees.

Thomas Munro had been in charge of the Welland Canal enlargement from 1872 until January 1889 when John Page, Chief Engineer, Canal Branch, asked him to survey and report upon the feasibility of locating a new canal between Lakes St. Louis and St. Francis to replace the old Beauharnois Canal. Munro completed the preliminary work, supervised the construction of the new canal and remained until 1903 as engineer in charge of the Soulanges Canal. RG43 General Inventory
