Press conference held by the Liberal Party of Canada represented by: David Dingwall, MP and critic for consumer and social affairs; Jean-Claude Malépart, MP and social policy critic, and by William [Hadad?], chairman of the U.S. Generic Pharmaceutical Industry Association. In an opening statement, criticism is directed at Bill C-22, legislation amending the Patent Act which is allegedly held responsible for contributing to future increases in drug prices in Canada. In a question period the following topics are discussed: a complaint regarding the refusal by the House of Commons committee to allow foreigners to testify before it with respect to amendment of the Patent Act; discussion of the Drug Price Competition and Restoration Act; alleged deceit practiced by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (U.S.A.) in promoting its battle against generic drugs; cost of non-generic drug production in the United States, and prices set for American non-generic drugs.
