This series consists of central registry files from the 700 series and their accompanying indexes. This registry system, known as the "700 series" because 700 was the primary number used in its classification scheme, began in 1915 following the merger of the Fisheries Branch of the Department of Marine and Fisheries with the then newly-formed Department of Naval Service. This record series was maintained up to the 1970s, even though, from 1915 to 1970, the supervision of fisheries was assigned to units within various departments or to separate independent departments.

The series is arranged into 3 sub-series consisting of the registry files themselves as well as two sub-series of indexes which can be used as tools to facilitate access to the registry files. The subject index cards (which must be ordered like a regular document; see RG23-2-c and finding aid 23-5) provide a list of subjects used to classify the records and will map subjects to relevant file numbers. Please note that the subject index does not contain cross-references so researchers should pursue a variety of applicable subject headings for their research.

The file classification index (RG23-2-b) is another tool that can be used to facilitate access. It lists the classification numbers used at the time and their related subject matter.

Once the pertinent file numbers have been identified using the indexes, researchers can then review finding aids 23-4 and 23-29 for the registry files in order to determine which files to consult. The finding aids to the relevant unprocessed accessions should also be consulted.
