This is a preliminary record; please consult the accessions linked to the various sub-series. Series consists of records created and /or maintained by Natural Resources Canada's Energy Sector and its precursors.

The series primarily consists of records from various energy programs and initiatives that were managed by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. These records, dating from 1966 onwards, are organized into sub-series by energy program, with additional sub-series created for the mixed-program records of regional and divisional offices.

The series also consists of historical and reference materials on Canadian energy policy that were maintained by a senior policy advisor (R.B. Toombs) at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. These historical and reference materials, with outside dates 1945 to 1985, represent approximately 4.5 m of the series.

Finally, the series also includes approximately 19 m of coal and mineral resources records on the subjects of coal, peat, oil, petroleum, gas, radioactive elements, as well as energy more broadly (among other topics). These registry and non-registry files, eventually maintained by the Energy Sector, have outside dates 1894 to 1979. Later registry files (ca. 0.3 m), maintained by the Economic and Financial Analysis Branch, are also included in the series.

Canada. Energy Sector : The Energy Sector within Natural Resources Canada is responsible for advising the federal government on matters concerning energy. Responsibility for the analysis, policy recommendations and co-ordinate of federal activities relating to general energy development was consolidated under one entity. The Energy Program as first titled in1967 was composed of a small group of advisors to the minister. By 1992 the Energy Sector encompassed three branches and five major agencies and was responsible for dispensing billions of dollars in grants and program development money. In 1973 the western world suffered through a serious international crisis caused by developments within the global energy industry. The "Oil Crisis," as it was dubbed, spurred the creation of the Efficiency and Alternative Energy Branch (EAEB). Beginning in January 1974 the federal government established the first of a series of more than seventy programs intended to introduce active energy conservation and reduce Canadian dependance on foreign oil supplies. The Renewable Energy Branch was created in 1977 to assist in developing alternative forms of energy. Energy supply enhancement and conservation were two additional principles introduced by the National Energy Program, introduced in 1980. Some 60 million was allocated to energy research and development, especially with respect to alternative fuels. By 1985 the NEP was replaced by the National Conservation and Alternative Energy Initiative. The federal government maintains responsibility for regulating, encouraging and managing development of energy resources. Added to these objectives is the environmental protection function. In order to achieve these goals the Energy Sector incorporated over seventy programs each with a mandate established by act, order-in-council, Treasury Board or ministerial authority. The activities administered by the EAEB are described in a publication produced by the branch entitled "Directory of Efficiency and Alternative Energy Programs in Canada 1994." The Energy Sector within Natural Resources Canada is responsible for advising the federal government on matters concerning energy.
