Canada. Canadian Forces Station (Falconbridge, Ont.) : In response to east and west tensions and a growing fear of long range bombers, both Canada and the United States organized a series of stations across the Canadian North to act as an early warning system. In 1951 Canada and the United States began construction of the Pinetree Line of radar stations. Canada was unable to afford or man all of the stations and in the end the United States manned eighteen, and Canada sixteen. 209 RCAF Radio Station Falconbridge in Sudbury, Ontario was constructed and initially manned by Americans, with operations beginning in 1952. 33 Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was stationed at Falconbridge and tasked to provide an early warning service within the area of surveillance as well as collect, evaluate and display information on the air situation. The station was redesignated as C-9 in 1960, but continued its role to collect, discriminate and transmit radar data appearing within its radar coverage to a designated SAGE Direction Centre and to provide a weapons control function. On 10 August 1967 33 Radar Squadron was redesignated as CFS Falconbridge. In 1977 the station assumed administrative and pay responsibilities for Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre Sudbury. On 1 June 1985 CFS Falconbridge came under the operational control of Fighter Group in Air Command. Operations ceased on 31 December 1985 and CFS Falconbridge was disbanded on 1 August 1986. Upon announcement of its closure, the Air Weapons Control and Countermeasures School Detachment was moved to CFB North Bay. RG 24 General Inventory
