Canada. Canadian Army. Princess Louise's (New Brunswick) Hussars, 8th : The 8th Canadian Hussars have a long history and are Canada's oldest Calvary Regiment; their first formation, the New Brunswick Yeomanry Cavalry, being formed on 4 April 1848. They were redesignated several times over the next century, known as the 8th Regiment of Cavalry on 31 May 1872, the 8th Princess Louise's New Brunswick Regiment of Cavalry on 18 July 1884, and finally classified as the 8th Princess Louise's New Brunswick Hussars in August 1892. During the First World War the Regiment provided one squadron for the 6th Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles. The Regiment mobilized the 4th Canadian Motorcycle Regiment, CASF in July 1940. On 9 February 1941 the unit was allocated to the Canadian Armoured Corps and designated the 8th Princess Louise's (New Brunswick) Hussars. It was redesignated the 5th Armoured Regiment (8th Princess Louise's (New Brunswick) Hussars) on 15 October 1943. The unit fought in the Italian campaign under the 5th Armoured Brigade, 5th Canadian Armoured Division and was transferred to the North-West Europe theatre when the Canadian Army was reunited in February 1945. After the active unit was disbanded on 15 February 1946, the Hussars went through several designations. Finally, on 1 January 1960 they were called the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's). The 8th Canadian Hussars have engaged in peacekeeping service in Egypt and Cyprus, served in Germany and were called out during the October Crisis. In the 1960s the Regiment was stationed at CFB Petawawa, but it moved to CFB Borden in 1971. General inventory
