The Red International of Labour Unions was approved in principle at the 2nd Congress of the Comintern in 1920, and founded in July 1921 in Moscow at the time of the Comintern's 3rd Congress. Intended to be an international body of revolutionary trade unions, it was to organize labouring masses with the objective of overthrowing capitalism. It was also designed as a counterweight to the moderate, mainline socialist Amsterdam International, which came into being following World War I.

The records in this series -- reports, minutes, correspondence, telegrams, conference proceedings, circulars and bulletins -- reflect the activities of the CPC and its affiliated organizations on the Canadian labour front, on the Party's work with and through unions, as well as the CPC's connection with the Red International of Unions and the revolutionary workers' movement on the international level.

During the "popular front" era of "proletarian unity" -- as CPs everywhere were instructed to co-operate with traditional, centrist socialist labour movements in an effort to check Fascism -- Profintern membership began to dwindle away. By 1937, the remnants of the Red International dissolved the remaining shell of this organization by voting through its liquidation.
