La série se compose de catalogues sur fiches créés au Cabinet du Premier ministre (CPM), ainsi que de divers index créés par William Lyon Mackenzie King. Le catalogue sur fiches du CPM est un index par lettre de la correspondance officielle reçue par W.L.M. King lorsqu'il était premier ministre. Les fiches donnent un aperçu de l'ampleur de la correspondance traitée par le CPM, depuis la correspondance confidentielle avec les gouvernements étrangers jusqu'aux tribulations courantes des Canadiens ordinaires. Elles respectent en outre l'ordre primitif de la correspondance du CPM, qui a été modifié par la suite dans le cadre de la rédaction de la biographie de Mackenzie King. Il y a un index par matière incomplet pour 1924, des index (nominaux) de la correspondance personnelle pour les années 1935 à 1938 de même que des index de la correspondance personnelle et par matière pour la période de 1939 à 1948. Les fiches de la correspondance ont été établies selon la date de réception; elles indiquent le nom de l'auteur de la lettre, décrivent brièvement le contenu de la lettre et fournissent le numéro de dossiermoriginal du CPM. Par ailleurs, la correspondance portant sur un thème en particulier est classée d'après son importance pour le CPM, par exemple "lettre restée sans réponse", "correspondance générale", "document devant être signé par W.L.M.K.", "correspondance confidentielle" et "correspondance personnelle". Toutefois, les lettres ne font pas toutes partie de l'index et elles ne font pas toutes l'objet d'un renvoi entre l'index de la correspondance personnelle et celui par matière. Les répertoires de dossiers où l'on trouve une explication du système de classement figurent dans le volume 310.
Les fiches du CPM fournissent un index par lettre de la correspondance qu'il reste dans la série de correspondance du Cabinet du Premier ministre (J2). Les chercheurs doivent prendre note du numéro de dossier et de la date indiqués dans le catalogue sur fiches pour les repérer ensuite dans l'instrument de recherche J2. Ils doivent toutefois être conscients que des documents ont été retirés par la suite des dossiers du CPM ou qu'ils ont été détruits et qu'une partie importante des pièces (en particulier dans les domaines intéressant les biographes) et même certains dossiers sont maintenant introuvables. La consultation du catalogue sur fiches ne leur permettra pas de retracer les documents qui ont été retirés des dossiers du CPM; toutefois, si une lettre a été classée par la suite dans la correspondance de la série primaire (J1), il sera possible de la retracer à l'aide du site web du fonds des premiers ministres. De plus, les catalogues sur fiches sont peu pratiques pour effectuer une recherche générale. Un index séparé a été créé pour chaque année; il s'ensuit qu'il faudrait consulter plusieurs volumes de catalogues sur fiches lorsqu'un sujet de recherche porte sur une longue période.
A l'index du CPM s'ajoutent 13 index qui ont été créés par Mackenzie King. Il y a des index séparés pour les adresses, les remerciements pour souhaits d'anniversaire de naissance, les engagements pris, les discours et autres événements/sujets que Mackenzie King souhaitait consigner. Il existe un index pour les documents de guerre des années 1939 et 1940. La correspondance de guerre subséquente fait partie du CPM.
