Artwork in the collection comprises eight drawings and one print. Three of the nine works have been attributed to William Berczy (1744-1813). A sketch of a hand, a portrait sketch of a man in a brimmed hat and a drawing of two women's heads in profile are attributed to Berczy due to stylistic elements. A copy after Polidoro da Carravagio of figure studies, the head of a women in profile and a copy of Madonna and Child after Raphael offer no substantial evidence for attribution. Two further tracings after European masters, notably one based on the myth of Laocoon, and an etching of a woman's head in profile, were possibly in the study collection of Berczy but were not created by him.

The textual records comprise research material collected by John Andre for his study of the founding of Markham Township and the architectural work of William Kauffmann. Although the originals for the textual records date ca. 1790-1813, these records are all copies done in the middle 1960s to 1984.

Attributions et conjectures :

National Gallery of Canada curators Beate Stock and Rosemarie Tovell, who worked on the 1991 retrospective exhibition on William Berczy, assisted with the attributions based on stylistic and formal similarities.

Historique de la conservation :

From the estate of John Andre, and acquired by LAC in two separate acquisitions with the services of Sotheby's Canada which acted as broker.

See fonds record R7152 for the papers of William Berczy which relate chiefly to his involvement with the establishment of German settlers in Canada. The textual records date, predominantly, 1792-1812. The art collection also includes five other works by Berczy - two painted portraits, one portrait print and one reproduction.
