Sound commentary narrated by Jim Stowell, accompanying the lecture film, Ice Off Starboard. Commentary includes an introduction and the following scenes and activities: sailing day brings people out from various neighbouring states to see the Bowdoin sail off, including the Governor, news photographers on a rooftop and members of the general public; Commander MacMillan, his wife and a friend from Florida; dock at Sydney, Nova Scotia; crew included Harold Wood, President of Oberland College, scientists and academics; encountering fishermen who travel North in search of cod; Battle Harbour - skinning, cleaning and salting cod; remains of the Grenfell Mission; Bowdoin docked; Doctor Abbott, ship's doctor, scrubbing deck; Alfred Bailey, Director of Colorado Museum, photographing migratory birds at Inner Gannet Islands, including varieties of gulls and puffins; Arctic flora including sedums; Mr. Linseth shooting birds for Doctor Bailey's collection; Doctor Bailey's party wearing cleet shoes bringing back specimens including Black Back Gulls; Doctor Bailey coming aboard Bowdoin with a full with a wing span of four and a half feet wide; puffin; eastern sunrise; Hopedale - Moravian Missions; mission boat carrying supplies and sick call; mixture of half-breed (Indigenous) population; sled dogs; dwellings and mission buildings; hand outs of chewing gum or cigarettes to youngsters; Inuk woman smoking a cigar being taken home after an operation at a mission hospital; Naskapi (Innu) at Davis Inlet; Nain established in 1772 where approximately 200 people reside; Doctor Hettash greeting Bowdoin; supplies including clothing, books and drums of molasses and flour for cooking; plane from Ottawa; girls in summer dresses; baby wearing booties and bonnet - a gift from the Bowdoin crew; dogs; view from hilltop of mission at Nain; Christian cemetary; drying out clothing and qamutiik; bathing on deck of Bowdoin; Hebron - last mission service operating on coast; Commander Matthews climbing to the ice barrel for navigation and yelling instructions; Saglek Bay

1. James Stowell's lectures for his film ICE OFF STARBOARD (see ISN 126700). See also ISN # 126701, re-edited short version.~2. A crew consisting of 17 people formed the expedition to the coast of Labrador.~3. Ice Off Starboard was created as a form of day to day log by James Stowell.~4. Davis Inlet was a Naskapi community formerly inhabited by the Mushuau Innu First Nation. In 1948, the Newfoundland Government relocated the Innu of Davis Inlet to Nutak in northern Labrador, where they made their way back home. In 1967, the Innu of Davis Inlet moved and settled on Iluikoyak Island on a year-round basis, establishing the Davis Inlet community known as Utshimasits. In 2002, the community of Davis Inlet was relocated to Natuashish.
