Series consists of registers and entrybooks of correspondence, and investigation records accumulated by the Commission appointed in October 1840 to investigate all phases of Post Office operations in British North America. It documents affairs in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island as well as in Upper and Lower Canada, 1839-1845. The final report was published in the Journals of the Legislative Assembly of Canada for 1846, Appendix F.

The series also contains at least 359 postal covers from the years 1840 and 1841. However, it has only been indexed for volumes 3 and 4 . Covers were mailed from postmasters located in Lower Canada and Canada East, and provide replies to circulars sent out by the Post Office Commissioners in Montreal.

A number of postal markings and the usage of free franking privilege for postmasters are well represented in the series. Of particular interest are covers showing usages of the postmaster' manuscript town postmarks, the double circle and broken circle type postmarks.
