Dr. [John] Rae: letters from Dr. John Rae (1813-1893), 1852-1856, with two of later date, 12 March 1861 and 24 November 1875, and a printed article by Dr. Rae on "Some Physical Properties of Ice" from the Philosophical Magazine, July 1874 (f. 350).
It also contains papers of Lady Franklin: letters, n.d., 1855-1866, from Jane, Lady Franklin (d. 1875), widow of Sir John Franklin, and her niece Miss Sophia Cracroft (f. 389).
In addition, there is material of Mr. [August Heinrich] Petermann of Gotha: letter, 29 March 1899 (f. 402). At the end are four engraved maps of the Arctic regions, showing the discoveries of successive explorers, 1853-1854; and a letter of thanks for the gift of Arctic objects to the British Museum, 23 November 1855 (f. 405).
