Series consists of material relating to Franklin search expeditions. Captain [Richard] Collinson, C.B., 1850 in H.M. Discovery Ship Enterprize: letters, 15 January 1850 - 5 June 1875, from Captain Collinson (1811-1883), including (ff. 55-59) the printed and written notices left in the Arctic regions by previous explorers and found by Captain Collinson. Captain Sir Robert McClure, 1850 in H.M. Discovery Ship Investigator: letters, 1 January 1855 - 22 December 1860, from Captain Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure (1807-1873) (f. 63). Captain [Thomas Edward Laws] Moore in H.M. Discovery Ship Plover, Behring Straits; Captain [Rochfort] Maguire in H.M. Discovery Ship Plover, Behring Straits; and Dr. [John] Simpson: letters from Captain Moore, 1849-1851; from Captain Maguire, 1852; and from Dr. Simpson, 28 September 1849-1858 and n.d. (f. 112).

Series also consists of the following material: Captain [Henry] Trollope, 1853 in H.M.S. Rattlesnake: letters, 11 January [1853]-24 June 1857, from Captain Trollope (f. 198). Rear-Admiral [Frederick William] Beechey: letter, 29 November 1854, from Rear-Admiral F.W. Beechey (1796-1856) (f. 249). Lieutenant [William Hulme] Hooper: letters, 1851-1854, from Lieutenant Hooper (f. 252). Lady Franklin's Expedition, 1853 - Mr. [William] Kennedy, in the discovery Ship Isabel: lLetters, 1853-1859, from Kennedy and from Richard Bardin, engineer of the Isabel (f. 270).

It also contains material relating to the intended voyage to Behring Straits, 1853 - Mr. [William Parker] Snow in the cutter Thomas: letters, 19 May 1853 - 17 November 1892, from Snow (f. 310). Dr. [John] Rae: letters from Dr. John Rae (1813-1893), 1852-1856, with two of later date, 12 March 1861 and 24 November 1875, and a printed article by Dr. Rae on "Some Physical Properties of Ice" from the Philosophical Magazine, July 1874 (f. 350).

It also contains papers of Lady Franklin: letters, n.d., 1855-1866, from Jane, Lady Franklin (d. 1875), widow of Sir John Franklin, and her niece Miss Sophia Cracroft (f. 389).

In addition, there is material of Mr. [August Heinrich] Petermann of Gotha: letter, 29 March 1899 (f. 402). At the end are four engraved maps of the Arctic regions, showing the discoveries of successive explorers, 1853-1854; and a letter of thanks for the gift of Arctic objects to the British Museum, 23 November 1855 (f. 405).

This material is located on microfilm reel A-1545. Add. MSS. 35308 (Barrow Bequest Volume IX, Franklin Search Correspondence Volume III), ff. 1-409.
