Diary in the form of letters from F.W. Godsal, in Canada, to his father P.W. Godsal, April 1882 to February 1886 and November 1886 to March 1887.

In addition to family news, subjects include the voyage to Canada in 1882; a stay at Government House; the trip west through the United States to southern Alberta, describing geography, hotels and travel by train, stage coach and wagon; cattle ranching including descriptions of round ups and the formation of a stockmen's association; mail routes; land speculation; American and Canadian Indian policy; railway building; the North west Rebellion; Canadian politics; a return voyage to Canada in 1886; travel on the Canadian Pacific Railways; a trip to British Columbia; and a description of Banff National Park. Included are sketches of house and ranch buildings, travois, and CPR snow sheds.
