Haileybury, Ontario, north of North Bay. Two-steepled church in the foreground, buildings, and lake in background. This town was selected to house a mining school to instruct students of any age in the mining trade. The course is also open to miners and prospectors who desire instruction in minerology and geology. Street scene in Haileybury - street car comes to a stop and students alight. Front view of a large school chosen for the mining course. Silhouettes of students entering the school's main entrance. Students operating miniature mining machinery and taking notes, in classroom analyzing minerals by blowing into glass testing tubes, examining various minerals from all over the world. Shows showcase with various kinds of mineral rocks. Instructor looks over the shoulder of a working student. Student hands his work to the instructor - sketches of mining equipment and other machinery. Students watching instructor pointing to ore veins in mine and water dripping from cracks in the mine, watching ore being trammed over tracks to pockets, then transferred to skips and hoisted to the surface. Students watch ore being processed at the mill, minerals rise to the surface of large tanks containing bubbling liquid. Man standing near a large wheel explains this part of ore processing. Back at school shows rocks, donated by local mines, being crushed in miniature ore crusher. After further reduction in size the ore is put in flat vibrating containers. Student feeling for the mineral with his fingertips. Revolving mills containing steel balls further reducing the ore. Ore undergoing cyanide process in large tanks. Instructor demonstrates how to obtain almost 85% pure silver by adding sodium sulphide. Students watch instructor put chemical in glass test tube and pour out liquid substance. Powdered silver is then displayed in the palm of his hand. Man removing molten silver from furnace and pouring it into ingot molds.
