Interview of CBC television foreign correspondent Brian Stewart. He talks about: the work of a foreign correspondent; his ambition from a young age to become a foreign correspondent; his career as a print journalist; his daily routine at his base at the CBC bureau in London, England; the work of the field producer and how this relates to the work of the foreign correspondent; what happens when the bureau decides to cover a particular story; the relationship between the bureau and the TV news desk in Toronto; logistics such as arranging transportation for the crew and the approximately 32 cases of equipment, getting visas, clearing customs, and getting drivers and interpreters in the destination countries; the difficulty in getting interviews with officials in foreign countries; his belief in doing his own shotlisting in the field; the importance of writing the story to the available footage; his having the subject clearly formulated before he goes out and does the story; the need to be flexible as story angles change in the course of a day; how the reporter and cameraman work together; the role of the reporter in writing the story; the amount of time devoted to hard news rather than features; his spending 70 percent of his time “living out of a suitcase”; the increasing amount of travel required of foreign correspondents; the importance of getting back to Canada to keep in touch with what the audience is thinking and feeling; the length of foreign corresponding postings to various locations; the hiring of a London resident as the cameraman on Stewart’s London-based crew; the occasional hiring of a Visnews; his desire to return to Canada in several years; foreign correspondent postings as plum assignments; the high profile of foreign correspondents; the move from film to video as the biggest change in TV news; the switch to videotape and satellite in adding to the workload, shortening deadlines and adding to the control by the news desk, decreasing the autonomy of the foreign correspondent; the advantages and disadvantages of being a Canadian foreign correspondent; reporting under dangerous conditions in Lebanon; his sense of gratification over his reporting on the famine in Ethiopia because he felt that his reports were helping people; and the obstacles posed by foreign governments regulating what can be filmed.
