Oral history interview of Ivan Munn about his career in CBC radio and television news. He talks about: radio and print reporting in the 1950s; his work in the CBC television newsroom in Halifax, Nova Scotia starting circa 1960; the eventual start of news gathering by CBC television rather than just reporting; the early days of television news, when the cameraman would go out, shoot film and bring it back with information about the contents; his going back to radio work circa 1962; the use of filmpacks for much of the television news in Halifax even though the stories were as old as 24 or 48 hours and Halifax staff had to check the news wires to check if the information had changed; the later introduction of TV news feeds in the afternoon which were recorded for later broadcast; the early days in which a TV news crew could have as many as 5 people, including the reporter, cameraman, sound man and a person to set up the lighting; his later becoming the senior editor of the newsroom in Sydney, Nova Scotia; his moving back to Halifax circa 1978 to become news supervisor; the arrival of electronic news gathering (ENG) which meant that a reporter and a cameraman could go out and do a story, getting it on the air almost as quickly as radio can; the tendency of television to cover stories such as accidents and demonstrations because they have more impact on the viewer than radio coverage; the division between news and current affairs; the increase in control of the news by the assignment desk; the advantage of computerization in allowing staff to know what other CBC newsrooms are doing; changes overtime in the concept of journalistic objectivity; and his view that although reporters do more analysis now, it is still important for them to be neutral.
