The Pan American Games, sponsored by the nations of the Western Hemisphere, feature amateur athletic contests in a variety of sports. Since 1951, they have been held every four years, prior to the Olympic Games upon which they are modelled.~This unedited footage is part of the coverage of the 1979 Pan Am Games held in July in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Narrative by an unidentified commenttor accompanies excerpts of fiving, swimming, water polo, judo and gymnastic events.~Coverage of diving events includes platform dives by fourth place winner Elizabeth MacKay of Canada; bronze medalist Linda Cuthbert of Canada; silver medal winner Janet Thorburn of the United States; and gold medalist Barbara Weinstein of the United States. The dives are repeated in slow motion.~Helen Vanderburg and Kelly Kryczka of Canada are interviewed about their synchronized swimming duet, for which they won a gold medal. The 200-meter breast-stroke race for women includes footage of Canada's Anne Gagnon, winner of the gold; Joanne Bédard of Canada, who took the silver; and Patricia Speeds of the United States, who won the bronze. The women's 400 metre freestyle swimming race includes shots of eight international competitors, including gold medal winner Cynthia Woodhead from the U.S.; silver winner Tracy Caulkins, also from the U.S., and bronze medalist Wendy Quirk of Canada.~The men's 200 metre individual medley swimming race includes footage of native Puerto Rican Jesus Vasallo, setting a new world record for the United States. Graham Smith of Canada is shown winning the silver and Scott Spahn of the U.S. wins the bronze. Participants in the 200-metre backstroke swimming event for women include gold medalist Linda Jesek of the U.S.; silver winnter Cheryl Gibson of Canada; and bronze medalist Libby Kinkead of the U.S.~Water polo for men is shown in an excerpt of the game between Canada and Puerto Rico won by Canada, whose team won the bronze in this activity.~Judo coverage includes an interview of Phil Takahashi of Canada and footage of the match in which he wins a bronze medal. Also interviewed is Louis Jani of Canada, winner of the gold medal in the 86 kilogram class in judo. Additional judo events include gold medal winner in the 65 kg class, Brad Farrow of Canada, versus Luis Omnura of Brazil, and Guillermo d'Nelson of Cuba winning the gold in the 71 kg class against Kevin Doherty of Canada.~Gymnastics includes shots of Canada's Warren Long on the vault winnning a silver medal and Sergio Suarez of Cuba, winner of the individual all-round gold medal, also on the vault. Jorge Roche of Cuba wins a gold on the rings and Jean Choquette of Canada places fourth on the parallel bars. <60mn>

Verification of the names of athletes was obtained by consulting a report on the 1979 Pan American Games borrowed from the Canadian Olympic Association in Montreal, as well as a list from the federal government's Athlete Information Bureua.~2. A brief segment of footage on the world kayak and canoe championships at Jonquière, Quebec, precedes footage shot in Puerto Rico.~3. The donor's list indicates the title as "Pan Am Games - Puerto Rico"; there is no title on screen.
