Interview with Arthur B. Goodmurphy about his experiences with the 28th Battalion during World War I. Goodmurphy begins by describing the "pretty wild" action at Courcelette, where he volunteered to escort the new tanks by "moving the wounded out of the way." Even though "some [tanks] went out of action," the enemy was caught unprepared with only field guns against the "iron monster." He depicts a dramatic scene at Vimy on the opening day of the Allied offensive. Dug in near the chalk pits at zero hour, the massed troops "waited." "Everything was quiet. There wasn't a sound. All of a sudden, the earth seemed to shake, and the bombardment opened up."~Providing another exciting account of the offensive at Amiens, Goodmurphy remembers "the first morning was foggy when we went in." "All of a sudden, the fog lifted...and the sun came out." He continues, "There was cavalry, infantry, tanks, aeroplanes - everything all over the place, and all ours, all going ahead." He recalls being pinned "down by enemy fire when "we heard a noise behind us and one of our big female tanks pushed its nose" between the lines of battle. "...And the Germans panicked...and started to run, and everybody opened up on them." He also describes a fight between German "red devil aircraft" which were harassing the 28th and the Allied aircraft "flying blue ribbons" which shot a German plane "down in flames."~In closing, Goodmurphy recounts the controversy surrounding the death of Private George Price of the 28th, who was fatally shot "through the heart" just as Armistice was declared.
