Interview with Regimental Sargeant William Patrick Doolan about his experiences with the 21st Battalion during World War I. Doolan enlisted in 1915 and outlines his participation at several major Canadian battlefronts in 1916 and 1917, such as the Somme, Vimy, Hill 70, and Passchendaele. At Amiens in 1918, he remembers the enemy barrage and the men "all around him" who were killed in his trench. Realizing he was seriously wounded with no one to help, he "poured iodine" into the hole in his steel helmet and drank rum. He describes how he then stumbled unassisted to the dressing station "right onto the operating table." Lucky to survive, he remarks that the doctors agreed that the rum "probably kept him alive."~Among the many topics he talks about are: the duties and responsibilities of the various officers at the battalion's headquarters; the duties of the typical infantryman; his personal views on the treatment of prisoners; and the "low point" in the war for him.
