Platoon Commander Charles Stevens talks about his experiences with the 20th battalion during World War I. Having enlisted in 1914 because "war appealed to young boys [who] did not know how ghastly war would be", Stevens recalls his first time in the lines "sandwiched between seasoned units" at the Messines Front. Recalling Christmas Day 1915 as "pretty glum", he remembers the early morning shelling from the enemy lines and the deliberate killing of the battalion's stretcher bearers often rewounding wounding men. He also describes the monotomy of trench warfare at the M & N trenches where they dug in like "rats."~At the Somme, Stevens describes the pimitive shelters they constructed from tin and waterproof sheets. He talks about the "male and female" tanks and the open warfare. Recalling the extensive planning for the Battle of Vimy, Stevens states that the Germans regarded the ridge as "invincible" until the Canadians took the offensive.~Referring to the Battle of Passchendaele as "one hell of a dirty hole", he recalls "the plank roads floating on liquid mud" and, in particular, the rescue of a fellow soldier who had been buried up to his waist in mud for two days. He also saw men "who couldn't take it anymore" injure themselves with self-inflicted wounds to avoid battle.~Fighting his last battle at Arras, Stevens talks about the lightening raids on enemy lines and recalls stumbling across a German officer who had committed suidcide in disgrace for "loosing his trench." Hit by a mustard gas shell, he describes the "Scotch douche" and "electrical treatment" he endured for his burns.
