Interview with Ed [Edward Frederick Phillip] Youngman who talks about his experiences with the Transportation Unit of the 19th Battalion during World War I.~Appointed as Colonel John McLaren's horse groom, Youngman recalls transporting over 1000 horses and mules by ship to England. He describes leading horses up the gangplank of the "cattle tramp", securing the animals in narrow stalls in the hold and "rigging up a winch" to hoist sick and injured animals overboard.~Youngman and his fellow soldiers in the unit who were nicknamed "mule skinners", describes the work the animals accomplished pulling rations wagons, portable cook kitchens, gun carriages and medical carts. In particular, he outlines how the transportation unit loaded supplies into wagons to resupply the unprepared Canadians troops at the Second Battle of Ypres. He also relates "one of the saddest things I ever saw" at Vimy when a mule skinner and his ammunition wagon were hit by enemy fire and the dying wagon master lay down and died with his "beloved" horses.~Turning to the Battle of the Somme, Youngman talks about loading pack mules with boxes of Mills bombs "already detonated" fearing "that the mule and I would go to heaven together."~Other topics discussed are the cavalry charge, loosing animals in the mud at Passchendaele and supplying the troops with rations and guns during the last months of war when they had the Germans "on the run."
