Interview with J. [Joe] Dwan who is interviewed about his wartime experiences with the 15th Canadian Infantry Battalion during World War I.~Dwan, a former steamfitter who enlisted in 1915 with the 48th Highlanders, trained at Niagara and was drafted to the 15th battalion in England. He remembers his first time in the lines at Ypres where he was instructed to dig trenches which disturbed "hundreds of rats." At the battle of the Somme, he was assigned to a Lewis machine gun unit and remembers seeing "the whole British Army advancing ." "It was an amazing sight." He also remembers a close call when a bullet sliced through his canteen and was "deflected by his spoon."~Describing the battle at Courcelette as "as quite a do," he recalls digging trenches through a cemetery until it resembled a "huge defensive fort." At Vimy, he recalls witnessing an air battle between Allied and German planes. Also, he decribes how he rode a horse for the first time and the horse fell on him "smashing his leg." "And that was the end of the war for Joe."~Throughout the interview, Dwan relates several amusing incidents including the one in which a buddy whose kilt was entangled in barbed wire "and came out in shirttails," and the character nicknamed "Hinky Dink, the minenwerfer dodger" who, it is said, could outrun the German minenwerfer bullets.
